As you point out, small nations can pioneer, lead and teach countries many times their size. Often this is missed or underappreciated.

New Zealand in the 1960s suddenly lost its biggest customer when the UK joined the European Economic Community. It took NZ 20 years of dedicated work to replace the market loss. This was an experience worth studying by Britons before deciding on Brexit. Maybe NZ was considered too small a country to offer the valuable lesson.
