Not only has that base of followers been mustered and the pathway established as you say, but the underlying issues that Donald did not create but rather lived in, are still with us. They are even more so now because of both Donald and Corona.

The big issue for the US to my mind is gross inequality of income, wealth and opportunity. This stage is set for another populist who will be a different icon from Trump and to our horror could also be one more intellegent.

As you say vigilence is required to keep this in check and the threat to democracy will not abate until fixes are found to the inequality question.
