Private investment is desirable because accountability and generating wealth and profits are the focus.

Discovering a Botswana advantage is key to prosperity. This advantage can result from a shift in circumstances, commonly adverse — like less demand for diamonds or crops failing because of climate change. The advantage could also be related to an old industry (e.g., from New Zealand sheep farming came animal blood products with scientific and medical uses).

Although desired, directly creating jobs does not drive an economy — in reality, it saps it. I wrote on this in the U.S. and invite you to read or listen to "Jobs! Jobs! Jobs! Cry the Politicians."
