It's advantageous to avoid lasting harm or death while climbing the mountain. But fatality can be a milestone for another's success.
One of the most enjoyable books I have read is David McCullough's "The Wright Brothers," which beautifully tells the story of Wilbur and Orville's methodical observations, physics, engineering, passionate drives, and trials and errors. They were calculating and brave but never reckless or foolhardy.
