Sanctions are a clumsy, if not ineffective, way of fighting a war.

And against Putin, they were the antithesis of what was required. Putin's invasion needed to confront a physical barrier of force, which was present with brave Ukrainians, but this required multiplying immediately by NATO.

Praise has been ladled on Biden for his handling of the Ukraine war. History may not be so generous. He has slow-walked every stretch of the road, beginning with sanctions and currently with Ukraine's entry into NATO.

Ukraine should immediately come into NATO. Apart from sending a decisive message from the West to Putin, not doing so will eat away at Ukrainian aspirations and, worse, could sour Zelensky and Ukraine on America, similarly to Turkey on Western Europe over entry into the EU.
