Dillion, self sufficiency of energy (or whatever) actually makes the world less secure and price and supply more volatile. As an example, look at Texas and it's self sufficient power grid.

The idea is to have many sources of supply -- including oil. The West buying oil and gas from Russia has a stabilizing effect, although Europe being so dependent can work the other way.
