Debra Ray, countries have volunteered to join NATO to give them better security: That was the motivation for the moves by Finland and Sweden recently. Independent nations should be free to choose whatever defensive alliances they want: It's NOT up to Putin in Russia to decide. And, it does NOT justify an invasion of a country that is NOT Russia.

Ukraine's want to be part of NATO is understandable. They would not have the continual interference of Putin (a mobster boss neighbor) and would enjoy an economy more like Poland.

NATO is a thorn in Putin's side because it's a constant reminder of how Russia (and surrounding countries under his influence) are performing so poorly. Whether NATO is the primary reason for Putin's invasion of Ukraine is arguable. There are many others, including the successful subjugation of Ukraine would elevate his popularity in Russia to allow him a secure retirement.

Many thanks.
