David, this is a bit misleading.

There is a labor market for different work and the price of that is simply depends on the demand and availability. Some instances where companies have big market share may influence the price of labor. Unions also can influence the price on the labor side.

Similarly, many folk believe that landlords determine the price of rents. They don't. They are created by the market.
