David Reavil, sanctions rarely work. Your example of South Africa is possibly one.

America has a history of applying sanctions that have done more harm than good -- Cuba, Venezuela, Iran, etc. Once in place, they are nearly impossible to remove, and the suffering they cause ordinary civilians are often misunderstood or not realized.
