Interest charges are often unappreciated when compared with other costs. From working in retail, customers (including some wealthy) would carry over balances on their store cards, costing substantial interest charges (employees would do it and successfully wipe out their discount). Astonishingly, they paid the interest complacently but simultaneously were outraged if asked to pay $10 on shipping, parking, or wrapping.

The price of eggs increased by a few dollars is met with horror, but the thousands of dollars paid annually by American households because of tariffs receive little complaint.

My haircutter says she sees the price of eggs but not the tariffs. Not knowing or understanding is terrific because it allows deniability.
