Dave, Arden was a popular Prime Minister, and she had built trust with New Zealanders, which was vital in getting the country successfully through COVID.

She was in danger of losing the next election to the center-right National Party, which was likely part of the reason to step down.

Ardern is a likable and valuable world figure. Many positions would open to her.

It's unnecessary to stay leading a country until you are eighty-six.
