The poor decisions likely hastened independence rather than causing it. Americans ruled by power thousands of miles away was not sustainable. Indians wanted their own identity even though the British put huge investments into the country.

Credit to the British that (mostly) relations today between colonizer and colony are excellent. The UK retained much of its international status until the worst decision it made -- Brexit.
