Caren, those polling figures may be reflect no imaginable alternative for the Republican nomination. Back in May, DeSantis and even Abbott were more in the picture. Remember with Joe Biden for the nomination? nationally his figures were consistently high than others because of recognition (any showing on the campaign trail those figures tanked).
There is a real concern here for Democrats grossly underestimate the capabilities of a (deteriorated as you point out) Donald Trump or other candidate. Hence, both of our concerns for strengthening the Democratic ticket for 2024. Relying on an opponent to continually double fault is a poor strategy for winning a tennis match. With Biden, Democrats got by with this once. A second time? That's pushing it.
