Caren, this perhaps is not as simple as it appears. VERY different countries -- and although Xi Jinping has a momentary convenience with Putin, this may not continue. I think right now is an opportunity for the U.S. to get onto a better footing with China and with skill this could be achieved (I have long agued that we have got it wrong). China and the West have much more in common than China and Russia (a supplier of raw materials but not a huge buyer of Chineese goods).

Right at this moment China can be very helpful to itself and the world. Xi Jinping (if anyone) has the power to stop Putin. Allowing the destruction of Ukraine and also Russia can't be in his best interest or China's.

Of course, Xi Jinping, like Putin, has also been in isolation with its disturbing effects.
