Caren, it's a dangerous time to be carefully navigated. We don't want to get too far out in front because that gives Putin an excuse to kick back in unseemly ways. But then we don't want to ease any pressure because that will likely result in him moving forward.
America and the West need to be steady and let work what has already been put in place.
To my mind, the big opportunities are with Xi Jinping and China. First to settle Ukraine and also for the U.S. / China relationship going forward. Difficult and challenging -- absolutely.
It was a dreadful mistake that Biden was absent from the Chinese Winter Olympics. We delivered a snub and Putin as the single person audience for the leader of a superpower. Frankly, how dumb arsed can we get. Foreign policy SHOULD NOT be determined by popular sentiment.
I agree, isolation is generally not good for people. And becomes particularly dangerous when those people have power that can't be checked and balanced.
