Vaccines are not absolute but can offer a high degree of protection. A flu shot is worth it because it diminishes the chances or severity. The big way vaccines works though is that the more people participate the more a virus is contained -- and, we are safer.

You say you are a statistician. I wish more of us were and we we would be way better at accessing risk.
