Although American living standards have never been higher, there is unhappiness.

Instead of a sad decline in patriotism, it may be a lack of aspiration. The national leadership (or lack of it) under Trump and Biden has focused on restoring the past—MAGA, protectionism, and isolationism. Neither candidate for 2024 has outlined a future. This contributes to a sense of going nowhere—worse, that America is under attack and needs to hunker down (from China, for instance).

A revitalization of 'service' may help add responsibility and connectivity and make us less lonely.
