Despite his eighty-one years, the fact that most Democrats would prefer another nominee and his woeful polling numbers, Joe Biden is determined to stay for another term. As an incumbent, he survived without serious challenges and passed the point when a primary (without him) could have offered a younger, more talented nominee. Short of the unexpected, Democrats are stuck with Joe Biden to oppose Donald Trump, the likely Republican nominee.

Biden’s opening campaign speech on January 5, 2024, was mostly a default message, as others on the economy, infrastructure, and past accomplishments have failed to resonate with voters. Biden focused on who we are as Americans, that democracy is in peril, and the unbelievable awfulness of Donald Trump. We can expect similar Biden speeches to tour the country, but will they change minds? To many, the traits described by Biden are Trump’s appeal, and further wretched descriptions can have the “Basket of deplorables” effect Hillary Clinton experienced.
