Beautifully written as always, Alexander.
I think we can get something out of the ashes and rebuild.
An irony to me is that the Republicans are, in many ways, better positioned to move America forward than the Democrats. They have a base across the country, particularly in local politics, that Democrats gave away.
QAnon Shaman delivers howls from fly-over-territory to Washington. The divide is spectacular. The Democrats carelessly and unwittingly contributed to this, particularly by withdrawing from electorates where they were unlikely to win.
NEW Republicans in a New Republican Party need to come into leadership positions. Tony Blair managed to do this with the dyed-in-the-wool and going-nowhere old Labour Party in the UK. He completed much of the Thatcher Tory plan, which it was poorly positioned to execute.
America needs to restore economic mobility. Paths forward are too narrow or closed for way too many, which hurts everyone. Getting much more money into the social fabric is essential. A generous base income of sorts makes sense, relieves security tensions, and provides a base for a more prosperous future. But the mention of guaranteed income by Democrats would immediately be labeled as socialism, whereas if New Republicans offered this, it would not. New Republicans, likewise, could tackle climate, healthcare, and even immigration with less resistance.
Many thanks. Best to you.
