Barry Gander, the Republican's (likely) flippant proposal, can be viewed quite differently if Democrats took a break from their dogma (and Pinetty).

Republicans have opened an opportunity to change the tax system fundamentally, making it more straightforward, fairer, easier to collect, and less costly to administer.

We could adopt the Republican proposal of transferring not to a 30% national sales tax but a VAT (Value Added Tax) that they have previously opposed.

The huge difference between Sales Tax and VAT is that the latter includes all transactions, not just retail. Companies would HAVE to pay taxes.

A VAT means everyone, including companies, is paying tax because all purchase stuff.

While appealing, taxing hours of work would have collection nightmares on a par with taxing wealth (something Elizabeth Warren could never get her brain around). Instead of evaluating shares, options, yachts, antiques, artwork, and vintage cars, the government must verify hours worked.

The concern with VAT is that it amounts to a flat tax. A generous Base Income could correct this downside for all, including Elon Musk.

Base Income has appeal with traditional Republicans because it generally maintains free-market forces, and for the MAGA crowd, it retains individual decisions and freedom.

A huge obstacle to any fundamental changes is SPITE which is not only with nutty Republicans.

Many thanks. Always worthwhile reading.
