B Kean, I have an alternative take on this.
The Democrats are now in a fix that was predictable and avoidable.
I have long argued that Biden should not seek a second term, likely jeopardizing the presidential race.
While two-thirds of Democratic voters wanted an alternative, Biden gave them the middle finger and hung tight, and few acted or dared to challenge his decision. Some were offering warnings: Obama suggested the next generation take over, Pelosi (although supportive of Biden) said another could do the presidential job, Carvel was most alarmed by Biden's lousy decision and surrounding complacency, and Axelrod (a cautious straight-shooter) was always wary but became increasing alarmed.
Unfortunately, the Hur message came so late, although it may have been previously dismissed if not for the growing anxiety about Biden's condition.
Forget about shutting everyone up. They are not the problem -- Biden is.
The concern is, what now? Replacing Biden at this stage is messy and likely not democratic. Still, it could be done.
An immediate action is to beef up the vice presidency.
I discuss as much in "Biden Needs Help to Win 2024."
Best.
