Alexander, this is questionable.
A populist in the form Donald Trump arguably has little to do with the above. He is the comeuppance of years of American neglect of folk who were left behind because of he fantastic advances in trade, mainly globalization. We were actually warned at the time to offer opportunity to those (mainly white males) in industrial era jobs. But we were deaf and cheap.
Democrats added to the division by withdrawing from those old places to focus their resources in cities where they were more likely to win races. Republicans filled the vacuum in these local, rural and decaying places. It's going to be a long slog, but Democrats have to get back into these places where people, now particularly, don't look like them. This is doable but will take time, a lot of effort and money.
The midterms are incredibly important. So is the presidential race for 2024 where they sorely need to change candidates. Otherwise Democrats could well lose the White House as well.
Many thanks. Always fun.
