Alan Tabor, a wealth tax sounds fine, but in practice, it would be a nightmare to collect (France, of all countries, dropped the idea). More aggressive inheritance tax is easier to manage and reduces income disparity (e.g., in the UK after the introduction of estate duty in 1894).
Introducing a VAT (Value Added Tax) in America makes sense because businesses not making a profit. The likes of Amazon would also be paying tax. The VAT could replace income and corporate tax altogether. It is a flat tax and, therefore, would need to be coupled with a generous basic income for all in America. This would achieve economic mobility and opportunity, suffering from income disparity.
Many thanks.
