Many writers (and good ones) need to respond to readers' comments. This is a colossal mistake that hurts the writer and reader. It's undoubtedly a turn-off to readers who must be considered customers. Customers tend not to come back if poorly treated or ignored.
You are very responsive to your readers but must be hurt by the general neglect.
The comment section of articles, editorials, and op-eds in the New York Times offers depth and expansion and, often many times, the value of the original writing. It's fantastic that we have the luxury of real-time comments on Medium.
I write to communicate a perspective on an issue and invite a discussion. Otherwise, it may be a personal diary.
