In the 1960s and 1970s, Britain nationalized industries that were no longer competitive at enormous cost to all Britains -- including those who worked there.
Margaret Thatcher's brutality changed that, and with later help from Tony Blair, the U.K. fashioned a new prosperity for itself.
But significant numbers were left behind, partcularly in the industrial north of England, and suffered. The problem was the careless treatment of displaced employees and not the economic transition -- Brexit resulted.
