Medium has shut readers out because of the paywall. Customers are unlikely to sign up to read a single article but may do so after reading a few.

Medium desperately needs readers, and it is pursuing the fashionable closed community model, which will make it smaller and less profitable for everyone.

The paywall discourages referencing of Medium articles in other publications. I now use my website when I'd prefer to use Medium.

I noticed that several excellent writers are now using Medium as a secondary platform. I assume they are doing so to make a few dollars but are paying little attention to readers, which hurts Medium.
