Medium has become a closed shop, which hurts everyone. Not being able to read a limited number of articles without meeting a paywall prevents readership and new subscriptions. There will inevitably be a diminishing pool of readers.

You are a welcome exception. However, most writers on Medium fail to treat readers as customers, mainly by not replying to comments. This is the single most detrimental thing writers do to themselves and Medium.

As in any business, customers will go elsewhere if ignored. Should writers understand that they are less important than readers, their fortunes could change for the better.
